aims
Introduction in the basic concepts of accelerator physics, especially linear beam optics and beam dynamics. Knowledge of different types of accelerators (linear accelerator, re-circulator, circular accelerator) and of relevant technologies (radio frequency systems, accelerator cavities, magnets, particle sources, beam diagnostic devices).
requirements
Basic knowledge of electrodynamics, relativistic, classical mechanics. Some knowledge of geometric optic would be helpfull but is not mandatory.
structure / topics / contents
Linear and non linear beam optics and beam dynamics, linear and recirculating accelerators with normal conducting and super conducting magnets and radio frequency systems, circular accelerators, colliders (e.g. LHC), synchrotron radiation sources (e.g. BESSYII), particle sources, beam diagnostics, new trends e.g. energy recovery linacs.
Occasionally we will visit accelerators of HZB to see the hardware and for demonstrations.Within the tutorials we will partially work on case studies.

There will be weekly exercises and a final oral exam.

If possible: Excursions to HZB accelerator installations (BESSY II, MLS, SRF photo-injector test facility, cyclotron for proton therapy).
